In the span of a week, I hosted 100 people at a Holiday Market at my house, filmed a local news spot, flew to Chicago to teach a Vision Board Workshop, flew back to Austin for 24 hours, then went to Denver to host Haven Well Within’s first store opening. It was a week of exciting opportunities I genuinely didn’t want to miss. But the one thing I neglected to do was carve out any time to recharge—and my body made sure I noticed.
One morning in the midst of it all, I woke up completely exhausted. My body felt like lead and my throat was dry and sore, begging me to stop talking. I spent a day in bed, mostly sleeping, then flew to Chicago, climbed into bed in my hotel for a couple hours, then kept going. It wasn't until Sunday that I finally got the deep rest my body was craving.
We put so much focus on learning to manage our time, but last week reminded me how important it is to manage our energy. And as we enter the holiday season—full of so many wonderful activities that can also leave us exhausted—we should consider the energy we’re bringing to those things and people we commit to.
It’s ENERGY that enables us to fully show up as our best selves, undistracted and present with those around us.
When we nurture our mental, physical, and emotional energy, we’re vibrant and alert. When we don't, we’re exhausted, we have brain fog, and we lack confidence.
But here’s the thing: even when we’re crazy busy and juggling a million things, we can actually generate energy. Yes it requires a little time and intention, but these two practices are incredibly effective for me (and that I’m promising myself never to neglect them again):
