The Wellness Rituals I Learned (and Loved) in Bali
3 are so life-changing, I’m already recreating them at home.
In the lead-up to our trip to Bali, work was crazy, the kids were hitting their “I’m bored” phase of summer, and the juggle was feeling very real. I was teetering on the edge of overwhelm, so when our plane touched down in Bali, I’d already decided to say “yes” to every self-care/wellness practice that crossed my path (the more “out there,” the better.)
And self-care, I did. Each morning, I woke before sunrise for prayer and journaling in the lush palm-lined courtyard outside our hotel room. Daily beach walks reset my nervous system, and (as I shared last week) I unplugged from social media the entire trip. And then there was the slightly more experimental: a scalp detox with warm coconut oil. The mud bath and sauna in the jungle. Spicy turmeric jamu each morning and ginger tea after every meal.
Each of these experiences was an invitation to slow down. To listen to my body and notice how I felt, both physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And witnessing how the Balinese weave these nourishing rituals throughout their lives reminded me that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a mindful pause to bring more awareness in the middle of the day can change everything.
I came home with a renewed desire to hold onto this feeling of unrushed presence—slowing the pace of life to enjoy its simple pleasures. In today’s letter, I’m sharing the most interesting healing practices I experienced while I was in Bali, and which ones I’m weaving into my life back home.
